In 2015, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has launched “Japan’s Friendship Ties Programs” which promote people-to-people exchanges between Japan and other countries to encourage an understanding of Japan’s economy, society, history, politics, diplomatic relations and culture. MIRAI (Mutual-understanding, Intellectual Relations and Academic Exchange Initiative) is the regional component of this exchange program, inviting groups of promising young leaders from Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus. MIRAI is a short-term youth exchange program, which aims to promote mutual understanding, to enhance intellectual discussion and to build strong networks among future leaders of Japan and the world. Each Participant is strongly encouraged to disseminate information about Japan and their experience learned throughout the Program through SNS media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube etc.
 
Note: Those who have participated in “MIRAI” Visiting Japan Program and/or similar programs funded by the Japanese government are not eligible.
* Those with residence records in Japan longer than six months are not eligible to apply.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!
1. To apply, it's mandatory to be enrolled at the University (undergraduate or graduate course) at the moment of the participation in the Program (not only when submitting the application); moreover applicants have to be 20 years or older at the moment of participation.
2. Applicants must be enrolled at the University of Malta, regardless of their Nationality.
3. Please, upload a University certificate which attests you are currently enrolled at the Universityalso, please upload an academic transcript, so we can evaluate your academic results.
4. If you have any language certification (Japanese or English language) you can upload them as well.
5. Please do not forget to answer the "special question of each country" (see below).

AN IMPORTANT NOTICE:
● Please note that a passport is required for this year’s MIRAI program application. When submitting the Application Form, the applicants must upload a digital copy of a valid passportwhich is the only identity document considered valid for the application, all others are invalid. Therefore, applicants who do not have a valid passport should obtain one promptly by the end of August and apply for this program.


VISITING JAPAN PROGRAM
1. Program Overview and Application Guidelines
The applicants should visit the following link

and read all the information regarding the program overview and the application requirements. The applicants should also download the Application Guidelines (In-person program) as well as Annex 1 and Annex 2, and read them carefully.

2. Application Form
The applicants must fill out the entry form with their correct information in English and upload the required documents, listed in the Application Guidelines, at

Under the question “Special question of each country”, please write a short (max. 200 words) essay about “The importance of cooperation between Japan and Malta in the field of the Group you are applying for as your first choice” (e.g. if you are applying for Group 4 “Science and Technology” as your first choice, you should write the essay about “Science and Technology”).
 
3. Once the applicants have submitted the form, they will receive a confirmation e-mail.

Please note that duplicate application will be invalid. The applicants must be sure to check if all the information provided is correct before submitting the application form (the applicants can save the form temporarily before submitting it).
 
The applicants can select two Groups, which they want to join as their first choice and second choice, among the following Groups:
Group 2: Diplomacy and Security Policy
Group 3: Economy and Business
Group 4: Science and Technology
Group 5: Environment and Green
 
4. Deadline: 10 July 2024, 01:00 am (UTC)

5. Notification of results: in August 2024
 
6.  The Program in Japan will be held in the following period:
Group 2, 3, 5: November 6-12, 2024
Gruppo 4: December 4-10, 2024

Please note that the visiting Japan programs may be postponed or the duration and method of implementation may change depending on the situation concerning infections or the occurrence of unforeseen events.
