On the 20th of April, Mr. KOBAYASHI Ryuichiro, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., paid a courtesy visit to the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ), and received a report on the project entitled “Criminal Justice Responses to Counter the Misuse of Artificial Intelligence for Terrorism in Southeast Asia”, which was funded by the Government of Japan and held in Jakarta in December 2025.
The International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ) is an international institution dedicated primarily to capacity-building for criminal justice practitioners in the field of counterterrorism. Established in 2014 as one of the inspired institutions of the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), the IIJ advances the GCTF’s principles and good practices through its practical activities.
As part of the project, a workshop was conducted for practitioners and policymakers from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, as well as experts from international and research institutions, focusing on the growing threat of terrorist exploitation associated with the proliferation of AI technologies.
Furthermore, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. expressed his hopes for the success of the “Workshop to Strengthen Criminal Justice capacity to Counter Terrorist Exploitation of Emerging Technologies in Southeast Asia” scheduled for this summer and exchanged views on further strengthening the relationship between Japan and the IIJ, grounded in a shared commitment to the rule of law.
