On the 10th of October, Ambassador and Madame Suzuki hosted a reception celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Malta, having the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, The Honourable Ian Borg, as the guest of honour.
In the ceremony, speeches by Ambassador Suzuki and The Honourable Ian Borg followed by the national anthems of Japan and Malta took place, in the presence of guests such as officials from the Government of Malta, Members of Parliament, representatives of diplomatic missions and local business representatives.
In his remarks, Ambassador Suzuki noted that the relations between Japan and Malta have continued long before the establishment of diplomatic relations in July 1965. The Ambassador referred to the visit to Malta by Bunkyu Mission to Europe in 1862 and the visit by the then-Crown Prince of Japan (later His Majesty the Emperor Showa) in 1921, as well as the friendly relations that have been nurtured over the years at the grassroots level in various fields such as economy, culture and academia.
The Ambassador also stated that, in the area of diplomatic relations, the partnership grounded on shared values and principles continues to be reaffirmed and strengthened through high-level exchanges, maritime security cooperation, and collaboration in the international sphere such as the UNSC and the OSCE.
Finally, Ambassador Suzuki expressed his expectations that the exchange of the Notes Verbale regarding the Working Holiday Arrangement between Japan and Malta, conducted on the occasion of the visit to Japan by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, The Honourable Ian Borg in July this year, will contribute to the promotion of mutual understanding between the peoples of our two countries and to the further development and prosperity of the bilateral relations.
