On the 5th of September, the Embassy of Japan in Malta, in collaboration with Hamada City of Shimane Prefecture, Japan, organised an evening of Japanese traditional performing arts “The Sacred Dance of Iwami Kagura: Dynamic Tradition of Japan”, at the historic Teatru Manoel in Valletta in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Malta. The Teatru was built in the 18th century and known as the second oldest functioning theatre in Europe.

The performance was graced by the presence of H.E. The President Myriam Spiteri Debono, The Honourable Ian Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, members of the diplomatic corps, former Honorary Consul General of Japan in Malta, and many distinguished guests. The theatre was filled to capacity.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Suzuki touched upon the commonalities between Iwami Kagura and Malta’s summer festas, such as both being the religious and cultural significance, cherished and preserved within their local communities. Ambassador expressed his hope that the audience would feel a cultural connection between the two countries through the performance. Ambassador further conveyed his expectation that this event would be remembered as a milestone in bilateral relations and contribute to strengthening the friendly ties between Japan and Malta.

The evening featured three representative pieces of Iwami Kagura—Hachiman, Ebisu, and Orochi—performed by the members of the Hamada Iwami Kagura Association. With their dynamic and graceful dances, accompanied by the resonant sounds of traditional music, powerful recitations, and vibrant costumes, the performers captivated the audience. The event served as a valuable opportunity to showcase the strength and beauty of Japan’s traditional culture.
